Book: Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative
Written by Austin Kleon and published by Workman Publishing.
This is an interesting one. The afterword on the 10th anniversary edition was probably my favorite part. You can tell the original comes from a young voice and is aimed at an even younger crowd.
There’s nothing new here and that’s the point: things need to be said again and often for them to take root in one’s mind and in our collective minds as well. Even writing this book seems to have been as much about the author taking in the measure of their process, laying it all out in a methodic way so they could make sense of it. Thinking as writing.
No doubt this will have inspired and will continue to inspire many people to get started creating or simply thinking and doing things a little bit differently. It’s a starting point: a damn good one, but it begs you to dive deeper, to forge your own path, to look at its influences and its influences’ influences.
