Book: A Philosophy of Walking
Written by Frédéric Gros and published by Verso.
There's a lot to love about this book. Recounting the lives of writers, thinkers and philosophers in the context of their walking habits. Walking as protest against capitalism, consumerism and authority, as an act of civil disobedience. Walking as meditation, as giving oneself completely to the here and now. But there's also a kind of drudgery to it. Maybe it's intentional: like the act of walking, the book seem at times to simply be going through a kind of repetitive movement (try counting the times the expression "putting one foot in front of the other" is used), yet one that doesn't present new vistas and that serves more to dull the mind than to excite it.
